Outdoor Education

Ngatuhoa Lodge

Every even year (2026, 2028 etc) our school enjoys a 3 day camping experience in the beautiful Kaimai/Mamaku Forest Ranges, at Ngatuhoa Lodge. The programme aims to engage students in first hand experiences that assists them in developing confidence, a sense of adventure and an attitude of responsibility, particular toward their own and others’ safety.

Our students have access to rivers, bush, ocean and mountain environments. These areas are a part of their Aotearoa playground so they need to have a set of basic skills and knowledge to self-manage in these areas safely. Their experience at Ngatuhoa Lodge opens these worlds and increases their awareness of the magnificent resources we have in our own backyard.

The contribution for the 2026 camping programme is approximately $200.00 which will cover food, travel and accommodation.

Each class will also need some parents/caregivers to participate in the camping programme by attending as a camp helper. If you would like to be a camp helper for 2026, and attend Ngatuhoa Lodge with your child's classroom, please email your classroom teacher to express your interest.

New Horizons

Every ‘odd’ year (2025, 2027), our Berkley education outside the classroom programme provides an exciting set of opportunities, known as New Horizons. Instead of going on a “camping” experience as a class, students select from a very wide range of activities.

The options offered range from a $30.00 school-based activity to a $550.00 experience, based in Northland and involved sailing and adventures in the Bay of Islands. A full list of options and costs will be published each year that New Horizons is offered.

Hillary Outdoors Pursuits Centre

Each year students have the opportunity to apply to attend the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre based either in Tongariro or Coromandel. Students must be physically fit and keen to learn team building, leadership and problem solving skills in an outdoor environment.

Students apply for this experience during term 2 and the programme will take place in term 4.
